EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
