Larian Studios Reveal a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The anticipation about The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team could be designing a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also notoriously permissive, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
